Fun Facts About Mega Millions

November 6th, 2014 by in Finance

Did you know?

There was a jackpot winner in the very first Mega Millions drawing. The drawing on May 17, 2002 resulted in a $27 million winning ticket in Chicago.

There was a second jackpot winner just one week later – which means there were two jackpot winners within the first three Mega Millions drawings.

More than 200 million tickets were sold (at $1 per ticket) for the then-record $390 million jackpot on March 6, 2007.

Mega Millions has awarded seven jackpots of more than $300 million, including the world’s largest jackpot of $656 million.

It only took 68 drawings (34 weeks) for Mega Millions to sell its 1 billionth ticket on January 7, 2003.

Mega Millions ticket sales reached 2 billion tickets just 67 drawings later (33.5 weeks) on August 29, 2003.

The third billionth ticket came just 49 drawings later (24.5 weeks).

Through early December, 2013, there have been more than 29 billion Mega Millions tickets sold since the begining of the game.

Fun facts and figures on the new Mega Millions

From the time the game changed October 19 through the $648 million winning jackpot drawn on December 17, 2013:

There were more than 68 million winning tickets sold in the new game’s first 17 drawings, with prizes ranging from $1 to $1 million (without the Megaplier).

Of those, two tickets shared the $648 million jackpot by matching all six numbers. A total of 59 tickets matched the first five numbers from the 1-in-75 matrix, just missing the Mega Ball, for the game’s $1 million second tier prize.

Two second prize winners purchased the extra Megaplier option for $1, super-sizing their winnings to $5 million (Texas) and $3 million (North Carolina).

Second-tier prizes were sold in 21 different lottery jurisdictions.

The Mega Ball now ranges from 1 to 15. In the first 17 draws of the new game, the numbers 3 and 7 came up three times each. There were two occurrences each of numbers 2, 8 and 15. Numbers 4, 6, 9, 10 and 11 were not drawn as the Mega Ball in this same period.
